Drove by Zalinda Farms and just had to

stop by and see if they would let us walk around

their poinsettia greenhouses. Met this nice young fellow

who not only allowed us to stroll and take pictures, but

spoke with us about his family's business in detail. Nice guy!

Apple Sauce

Peel, core and slice apples...

...add sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and H2O...

... cook on low overnight in the crockpot and in the morning,
warm, tasty goodness!
My sister, after seeing this post, said my
apple sauce looked like chili, which it does! Tastes so good
and is leaning toward that apple butter kind of taste.
The long cooking time made it turn a darker color, but
if I cooked it on the stove, it would be a lighter color.

Thursday Cooking

Made cake balls for the first time for the

band bakesale at Emi's school.

First bake a cake and let it cool, then crumble the whole thing up!

Then add a tub of frosting and mix well.

Roll into ping pong ball size and harden up by
putting them in the freezer.

Insert lollipop stick in frozen cake ball
and then roll in melted candy melts or melted
chocolate or candy bark; decorate as desired.
These were all sold!

Made these oh-so-good brownies too. I left some of them
at home for us to eat! Good recipe!

All to raise money for this girl's band!

I made this huge poster for the bake sale---it
was really fun to make!

Then Tom made a request for orange chicken for dinner.
The recipe wasn't hard, but it was a bit time consuming.

While trick or treating with the kids we visited the house of an older lady we know and talked with her for a while.

Other kids came to her door and the father of a couple of the kids
waited at the sidewalk dressed in the costume below, dark cloak and all.

Our lady friend, who must not be able to see too well at night, called out to him saying, "Does the nun want some candy too?"

The ghoul was indignant, replying, "I'm the GRIM REAPER!"

Sprained Ankle

Emi rolled her ankle at school last week

and after a visit to the emergency room, they declared it

sprained and gave her crutches and a brace.

The Vintage Marketplace at the Oaks is a place where vendors can sell their handmade, remade or vintage items. I bought a hand sewn herb decoration, several handkerchiefs, an old spoon, old photos and a vintage duel rubber band and paperclip holder. Fun stuff! Met up with Robyn and Linda for lunch!

Due to crowded conditions, we had to eat at the bar.
The stump seats were fine if you had a pad to sit on,
which I did not!

The market was decorated up so very nicely!
Each booth had that vintage shabby chic look
I like so much.

One of My Favorite Baseball Plays Ever

This play blew me away when I first saw it and it still does, especially since I can only throw about three feet these days! Nelson Cruz can gun it! First base thinks Cruz will throw to him, so he gets in position for the relay which goes over his head and the second base player moves to cover first. Cool to see the other players moving on the field, but Cruz takes care of business! The announcer even gets in on the play by coordinating his call with the umpire's out signal! Fun stuff!

Fun to go work at the Bishop's Storehouse, Kimo got to work in the sub-zero meat freezer. His legs got cold since he was wearing shorts.

Don't know if anyone else likes to watch dressage, but I was way into horses when I was a kid and I still like to watch dressage. This horse, Blue Hors Matine, was one of the best and certainly most beautiful dressage horses IMO; her flying lead changes are spec-tac-u-lar!

What a Summer So Far

I felt very blessed to be able to go to my friend's house and help out while her dad, Tom, recovers from injuries sustained in a home invasion robbery. She and her family are good people and the community has rallied around them with wonderful support. I've never heard the phone ring so much as at their house!

Visitors all day long!

Helped out Melody by watering her community garden and with temps. reaching 90-100 degrees everyday, it sure needed watering!

Melody gave me a ride in her Ural motorcycle with a side car...

...and practiced her acupuncture on my sore thumb.

Got the chance to visit my favorite restaurant in Texas, Casa Ole, and got some of their green sauce and chicken tacos! Yum!

I missed my own family terribly, as well as the cooler SD temps., but I was so sad to leave Tom M. and his family. I wanted to stay until he healed all the way. I love them.

Then a Scuba Lesson

The Young Men plus Emi took an introductory scuba lesson from Steve, our neighbor. Emi was a little fishy, swimming everywhere in that pool!

Kimo would have been a little fishy too, but he was having a hard time clearing his ears. Both of the kids love to swim.

Then off to the SD Fair. We always like the flower competition as well as the woodworking, quilting, etc. Tom liked this geometric flower.

We also like what we call the new product barns. Here Emi checks out a beautiful hammock.

And Kimo checks out a sushi maker that makes heart shaped sushi.

Memorial Day Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery

I have the privilege of taking photos at this cemetery for folks who can't make it here to do it themselves. Went out today to take some photos and was awed when I saw the thousands of American flags that have been placed next to the thousands of headstones. Tom was my headstone navigator today since one of them was hard to find.

Emi said she was annoyed by the pine needles littering some of the graves and decided to do something about it. She thinks differently than most people as exhibited here. I like you Emi!

During the Memorial Day weekend Medal of Honor recipients have a marker put above their gravestone that tells how they earned their medal; so touching and inspiring to read each one. Michael Monsoor saved other soldiers by throwing his body on top of a live grenade, sacrificing himself. Best wishes to his family on this Memorial Day.

Balboa Park has a neat cactus garden and rose garden right next door to each other.

Kimo and I went together and had a little mother/son time to ourselves.

We thought these looked like spritz cookies!

Emi has never liked sitting

still to have her hair brushed,

but with her hair getting longer

that may be changing!

for a metal stamping project. Just finished this crocheted shrug for Emi. A friend from church had done one for her little daughter, I liked it, so I gave it a try! Fun project! (Ask if you want directions on how to make it)

This is what Tom looked like back in 1995 when we first met while on Guam. Today Tom retired from the Navy after 20 years! The Navy has been good to Tom and our family and I'm grateful for "our" time with it. Thank you for serving, Tom, both our country and our family! We love you, Sailor! (Tom always looks so good in a uniform!)

Also reminds me that Emi loves a story I tell about my grade school days where I couldn't spell the word sugar! My teacher would let us try and try again to get the spelling right for each word we missed and I erased a hole in my paper trying to spell sugar correctly. (I was certain it started with "sh") Don't know why Emi loves that story so much, but she does!

Nursery dolls needed new clothes badly,

so I made some from an easy pattern

and some flannel I had around the house.

Kimo wanted to make this one a

Commando baby due to the helicopter

on his sleeper. I'd made Kimo a

pair of sleeping pants out of the

same material and when he saw

me cutting the baby outfit out of

the same material he thought I

was cutting up his sleeping pants!

He was shocked thinking I was

cutting up his brand new pants!-Ha!
